644 Volunteer Gliding School

Joining Instructions - Weekend courses

Location

No 644 Volunteer Gliding School, is located at Royal Air Force, Syerston, Newark, Notts. Syerston is on A46 approximately 5 miles SW of Newark, right filter travelling from Newark.

Routing

By rail: to Bingham which is on the Nottingham-Grantham line. On arrival at Bingham, buses to Syerston are available from Bingham Market Place. By road: W Gash and Son Bus Company run a Newark to Nottingham direct bus service at hourly and half hourly intervals. The Bus Stop for RAF Syerston is approximately 5 miles from Newark.

Documentation

Cadets must bring with them their Record of Service Book (F3822 or B/Cadets/2 as appropriate) with Personal Details, Parent/Guardians Consent to Fly and Fitness to Undergo Gliding Training sections correctly signed. A signed RAF Form 6424 (Air Cadet Medical Certificate of Fitness for Glider Pilot Training) is also required by all cadets attending for training.

Physical Limitations

Cadets should be aware that there are certain limitations in respect of weight and sitting height for the Vigilant aircraft as follows:

a. Maximum sitting height measured from seat to top of head - 99.23 cm (39.07 inches).
A 3cm head clearance should be maintained.

b. Maximum weight dressed for gliding including parachute - 242 lbs (110 Kg).
(A Mk 71/72 parachute weighs 13 lbs (6 Kg)).

c. Minimum weight, including parachute - 121 lbs (55 Kg).

d. Minimum Age, 16 Years

Reporting

Cadets are to report to the Headquarters of No 644 Gliding School RAF Syerston by 0815 hours, Saturday and/or Sunday morning.

Security

All MOD Establishments operate a high level of security. It is important that all cadets are correctly identified (by cadet Record of Service Book and joining instructions). All baggage must be clearly marked with the cadet’s name, rank, ATC/CCF Squadron and Unit (VGS) to which he/she is attached. All visitors’ baggage and vehicles may be subjected to search by security forces.

Messing and Accommodation

Is not provided. Cadets are to bring their own food and inform Duty Instructor as they travel daily if they intend to attend both days or just the Saturday/Sunday.

Cash and Valuables

There are NO facilities at Syerston for safe keeping therefore valuables will be near to hand. Do not leave money or valuables lying around.

Cameras

Cameras may be used on the airfield at the discretion of the Officer Commanding.

Award of Gliding Wings and Gliding Scholarship Certificates

a. Gliding Wings will be awarded on the successful completion of the Course.

b. GS Certificates will be forwarded at a later date but GIC Certificates will be awarded by OC 644 VGS.

Additional Information

“Trainer” shoes are recommended for flying training but not wellingtons or boots and shoes with deep treaded soles. Army boots are particularly unacceptable.

You will be notified who to contact if there is a problem during your stay at Syerston.

You are to familiarise yourself with those areas at Syerston that you are permitted to enter. A briefing will be given by the Course Admin Officer regarding areas “out of bounds” to you.

Cadets attending gliding courses may claim a partial refund (currently £6.90 per return journey) for travel by public transport by completing CPO5. A partial refund will only be provided if receipts or ticket stubs are forwarded with the claim.
